Coils and coil boots perhaps. I had a newish boot go bad and found it by swapping boots and coils- good to bad. I had noticeable misfires though.

Okay gotcha. I'm probably still a little embarrassed about paying the BMW dealer $3.25 each for those hose clamps. That's maximizing my expense, but not necessarily my investment. :)

Not trying to maximize investment in parts as much as trying to be assured of getting quality parts back on the car.
In all, the filter looks worse than it was, and the car would probably be fine...

Took 4.5 hours including breaks, dinner and a trip to get throttle body cleaner....

There are several excellent videos detailing the OFHG replacement on YouTube. Just be sure to keep track of the bolt positions as they come out of the housing.
