Yes. I had an e46 325i with an M steering wheel immediately before my F80 and the F80's: 1) Has a thinner rim, 2) Has less padding (i.e. it's less "squishy"), and 3) Has MUCH better quality leather.

+1 on the Jetta TDI or a Golf TDI. Reasonably entertaining drive, ridiculously good mileage (a buddy of mine routinely gets 50 mpg U.S.), and very practical.
