A couple of ideas. I haven't tried them, as my heat shield started vibrating, then mysteriously stopped. I'm sure it will be back. First, just trying bending it a little. (NOTE DO THIS AT YOUR OWN...

The precut LaminX film is pretty pricey, but I found uncut sheets on eBay for $10. Well worth the effort to cut and install. I did my wife's van 18 months ago and the headlights still look very good...

Honestly this is one of the few "go to the dealer" things. Unless you have a BMW specific Indy shop most won't have the sandbags and procedure needed to weight the car per the OEM procedure.

Nothing at all when you turn the key? Automatic? Maybe it's the shift interlock that won't let you start the car when it's in gear. Jiggle the gearshift in and out of park and see if that helps.

Bolts holding the two pieces of the shield together? That's what the shop suggested was happening. I haven't had both daylight and cold engine to allow me to poke around under the hood.

Sounds identical to problem I am currently having. Rattling noise only when the car is fully warmed up and engine is both in gear and at lowest idle, 5-600 rpm, with my foot on the brake. My indy...

If you are going to go to the trouble of one pulley you should do everything - 2 belts, pulleys and mechanical tensioner.

Still some noise after belt/pulley replacement

OP here. I have a diagnosis to my problem, and I hope I can help others with a similar rattle. I freely admit I added 2+2 and got 5. The noise had nothing to do with the belts and pulleys. BTW, if I...

Could be. The thing that's confusing is that it's ONLY ratting while in gear with my foot on the brake. In neutral, park or accelerating, no noise.

Still some noise after belt/pulley replacement

Nuts, I hate it when it looks like something is fixed and an issue crops up a couple of days later. Just had the belts/pulleys/tensioner changed on my 06 330. 96k miles. Paid my Indy to do it because...

I don't think you need to replace the radiator at this point, others might disagree. One note, the e46s had both mechanical and hydraulic tensioners on the water pump belt. Need to know which one you...

Cooling system. If it hasn't been done the expansion tank is on borrowed time. It will crack without warning and you'll cook the engine if you don't shut it down immediately. Mine went at 70k. Most...
