Badly overheated - head or whole engine?

528iT with manufacture date of 11/98, so it is a M52TUB28 double VANOS engine.

It's leaking coolant into oil but has no other signs of trouble - no exhaust, no overheating, no loss of power or...

That's good to know. I just blew the engine in my 1999 528iT and looking for either another M52TU or better yet, S52B32.

It's automatic, I assume that won't cause any issues?

Would it be easier to swap in a newer engine? M52TU? Since I am not sure how much damage this engine has sustained: It overheated so bad that it stalled.

Doing head gaskets and double VANOS at the same time?

I was planning to have the double VANOS seal done but as it turns out, blew the head gasket recently due to overheating.

I don't have any symptoms of the blown head gasket other than looking at...

Where do I start? I don't want to remove the fan clutch or the WP, just the radiator. How do I remove the plastic cover on top?
