Sounds to me like a vacuum leak somewhere - a small split in a vacuum hose possibly?

You could also search "smoke test" besides "vacuum leak" to find more info to see if it fits your problem...

If you recently had the brakes bled, then you would probably only need a couple of pumps of the brake for each rear...

You can replace the calipers without opening the ABS, just normal bleeding of the brake lines (which will include the calipers), like BMWFatherFigure...

I'd vote you just open the hood if you want to cool the engine quicker. IMHO, a hood scoop on an e38 would look funny.....
