I don't know much about the GLA, but from reviews I've read, it seems to be less than an entry level "luxury" vehicle. I have driven the X1 and think it is very well done.

Right, but for ED purposes you have to compare to the X1 because it's the only SUV from BMW available. Sizewise it truly is the competitor of the X3. Some features that the GLC offers, not available...
