I think keeping any German hot rod past it's warranty is a gamble and risk. As for the longevity of the engine itself, I think it will outlast the transmission. Clearly it's got a mind of it's own....

I had the grinding noise on startup as well. Found out it was the starter staying extended for too long. BMW replaced it under CPO warranty. I love that warranty!
