Smoke and odor from that area is commonly caused by a leaky valve cover gasket which can drip oil onto the hot exhaust manifold.

I think you would be happy with either choice. Both are upgrades IMO. The 6 speed manual is highly recommended for maximum enjoyment :thumbup:
