I just have one thing to add. Right after you place head back on the block and torque the last bolt,hook up the leak down tester to check for air sounds, anywhere. Of course each cylinder at TDC....

After all of this work and waiting for a head replacement, I assembled used head, cams, studs, exhaust manifold.
And went to reinstall on block. My son helped me. Exhaust pipe jammed up on frame...

It cost 325 plus 40 shipping no cams but I am going to use ones from old head.
Btw after all the time to remove all studs Brass valve guides freeze plugs.
I got a whopping 16 bucks from scrap yard....

You also may want to look at CCV valve, to see if it is working properly, ie clogged with mayo. Just rebuilt my severely abused and overheated head and the only good parts on there were the valve...

I purchased a 98 529i with an overheating issue, assumed head gasket. So I only paid 1,000.00 for it....

No, not a crack, the head gasket deformed from extreme pressure and it seems that the head gasket repair stuff actually expanded
