Get it smoked like edjack stated. You have a major air leak. Maybe your intake to head gaskets have air leakage which it's a possibility. Also code 1188-1189 could be a fuel pump / pressure issue....

I had rear air suspension , I had to release air pressure on my air bags. So yes I believe releasing tension on spring will help out tremendously

I know this may sound dumb but excuse my ignorance. Since I have aquired this 94 540i, I have been learning some unique things that my e39 528i never needed.
I changed the oil on it not to long ago....

Did OP resolve this issue? I can tell you that if you go to a junk yard, you can pull a pump from any BMW and it will work. This is the pump only. Meaning you will have to take the assembly apart...
