Pretty sure its a myth. I first changed the fluid on my E46 at over 200K miles - became very smooth, and no slippage when I sold it 250k miles.

@OP: Not sure what the horror stories here are about. This is my 5th BMW, and I can honestly say it's required less repairs than my friend's Accord.

No. A firmware update from BMW did change my interface slightly a few years back, but nothing major. The maps will not change any part of the software except the...maps. You won't get the 2014 look.

No, cooling issues have been resolved for the most part. May want to replace the water pump at higher mileage, but the days of exploding coolant tanks and cracked radiators are long over.
