I had the car in the air with jack stands on the frame and jacked up the wheel itself until the car lifted off of the jack stand. The wheel was fully loaded when I tightened them down.

Right. You have no sensor because you don't have the High-OBC cluster. I retrofitted the High cluster when I got my 97 back in 04. The High OBC will notify you on the cluster of low coolant level....

That's pretty much it. Drain it, unscrew it, replace it, plug the wire into the new one. Had that in my 97 528i M52 Single Vanos. Still have the tank and sensor. Pretty easy.
