The gap between the filler tube and the body is a quarter inch or less when unsupported by the "tank filler pot" which is unavailable for my '97. I used some pipe insulation to pad and position it....

Check your gas filler tube. On mine the rubber was deteriorated and it bumped the body much like a loose shock.
