Mine did the same. Replace thermostat with the Failsafe thermostat from Motorad. This thermo will only fail in the open position. They are a little more money but it beats an overheated engine.

By the way if you haven't changed the thermo do so and get the Failsafe thermostat. Can't remember the maker but google failsafe and you should get it. They will only fail in the open position.
