Does your car have the water cooled alternator? If so it's a $$$ if you let the shop get it for you. If they get it from BMW it could be $1,200 just for the alternator. You definitely want to change...

An Alternator is about $800 for a remanufactured one plus labor if you can't do it yourself. I think the shop would charge you more than $800 if they get the part as they always like to make money on...
