I have never seen an evaporator making a noise. They at worst case scenario start leaking and no more. And as you know it is a very very time consuming operation to get to them.

I must say it is the compressor itself. Have it removed and take it to someone who knows his way around them, but normally replacing them is the only remedy. E90 ones go much quicker.
