this seem clearly like a loose battery cable...

this seem clearly like a loose battery cable connection.check both ground and +ve terminals again and perhaps run thru the cables as far as you visually can.

the valve cover on my m52b28 cracked,resealed with 2 part epoxy and lasted awhile.replaced the valve cover with a good used one and fixed,but don't think that's the reason for the bad gas mileage...

i take it that you are just geting the message and not an actual trunk opening?
if so then perhaps the wires that is routed via the trunk hinge arm is damaged and shorting?have that checked out.

the newer engines ie m50 onwards uses chains and generally the suspension gets tired after 10 years and 100k miles....mines 109k miles and has had the absorbers and all 4 arms at the front replaced...
