I've seen hard start / driveability issues after a re-fueling before in other cars. In those cases it was a faulty EVAP purge valve. I would check that first before investing in a new fuel pump.

I'm pretty sure the sensor is there but only serves the purpose of letting the DME know what's going on. An gauge cluster swap is feasible but would require recoding after installation.

I had the exact same problem in my MINI Cooper S some time ago. The door latch mechanism was replaced under warranty and the problem was solved. $250 sounds like a reasonable price for the repair.
