Vanos not related at all to this. I would suggest that you visit the dealer and have them recheck the battery cable connections because it sure sounds like a connection issue more so than anything...

To add to Kat's post the drains also have a check valve in them so be careful if you go to clean them out.
Lubing the seals is recommended and if I was looking at your number I could clean the seals...

No way to tell if someone modded it unless you pull the driver's side panel off and see. You should have an NFRM vs FRM 2 or 3.
Pull the panel and read the numbers to be sure...

Oil filter housing gasket is not that hard a repair if you remove the radiator fan which makes the whole job easier. Also you can just loosen the intake manifold and pull it forward to get to the one...
