You could check the battery with a voltmeter, or take it to Autozone for testing. Did you used a aftermarket or Oem rebuild alt?

Yes doing the timing is a must, and it's easy if you have the tool. As for the chain, why not just replace it for peace of mind. Let me know if you have anymore questions.
