The update is that the gear was stripped and they replaced it. Lowest cost option. Hopefully it holds.

Well, they opened it up, saw that the gear was seriously stripped and replaced it. So I got the cheapest option, but no guarantee that there's not also something wrong with the actuator or xfer case....

Sorry, I'm not a DIY'er. I take it to a reliable indie BMW shop. I've been replacing MT fluid + front and rear diff + transfer case fluids every 30K miles or so.

Then they charged me 3/4 hour for replacing the reservoir, water...
