So, I've seen some discussion here in other threads about the pros and cons of Flickr versus other photo hosting solutions (smugmug, mac.com, pbase, etc). Then there's the rolling your own solution...

I think you've confused HDR with tonemapping. HDR is inherently neutral...it's just an increased number of EVs...

Is the anecdotal evidence based on Aperture 1.x or 2.x? 2.0 made a big difference in terms of speed on pretty much all machines. If you haven't played with v2, I'd highly recommend downloading it...
