Take a compression reading for each of the cylinders. If there's a significant variation, you likely have a head gasket leak.

The design must be extraordinarily poor since so many have experienced the failure.

A repeated problem with my 2002 Z3 2.5 liter was the exhaust camshaft position sensor. It happened three times.

It could be related to an oxygen sensor error.
