It's one of the simpler DIY's on our cars.

Good idea to PM the fuel pump which also doubles as the fuel level sender on one side.

SMG in M3 may be sturdier than in non-M e46, but I still personally dislike the concept and am not alone. Go manual, or all the way to slushbox.

We usually recommend replacing the entire cooling system.

Your cooling system is possibly in fail mode, and fail here fails the engine.
Most of us replace all key cooling system parts as preventative maintenance. And most of us DIY.

I use the cigarette lighter socket to power a small electric food cooler that sits on the rear seat floor. I let it run for 3-4 hours in my parked car and have never had a problem starting...

replace it properly and you will stop the leak and hence the smoking.
Oh, and BTW, use BMW gasket to avoid another leak soon.

WE're primarily a USA based forum and no e46 diesels exist here. Hence we'd help you with all parts/systems common to our cars, but most here know nothing about the BMW diesel engine.
