I heard similar issues about Michelin tires 15 or 20 years ago. More recently though, the feedback has been really positive.
I too have had good luck with Bridgestone.

Not an E39, but I put 16" Kumho Ecsta PA31 on our Honda Fit and they are the most disappointing, noisy, collapsing sidewall tires ever. I don't understand their good reviews.

Coils and coil boots perhaps. I had a newish boot go bad and found it by swapping boots and coils- good to bad. I had noticeable misfires though.
