4000 miles in 1.5 years probably means driving very short distances and not allowing the engine to fully...

Airbags shouldn't deploy from the rear impact. Front airbags should deploy from front hit, and side airbags will deploy from a side impact (on the side of impact).

I think a malfunctioning airbag...

There was a recall 08V-384 for the passenger seat sensor in 2008. The recall was for 2004-2006 X3. Check with a local dealer if BMW have done it for your car. If not, they may fix it for free.

If I recall correctly, the E90 has side airbags...

If I recall correctly, the E90 has side airbags in the rear, while the E46 does not (my child rides in the back seat). Plus the flat tire monitor on the E90. These two things tend me to sway a bit...
