I think the effects of heat may have something to do with it. Recently replaced mine, and the part had been redesigned to include a cylindrical alloy heat shield round the length of the coil.

No it doesn't. Make sure the engine's nice and warm so the old oil drains out freely. And re-set the oil change indicator once done (loads of 'how-to' guides on YouTube).

None whatsoever. The struts are gas-filled, and being fully extended will mean they're actually under less pressure then when the hood is closed.
