Mine acted like the op's on my x5 with the N52 until it really got bad. Then it was a pain to get it started and never had a CEL.

Its all about how you get in the car and how often you wipe it down. Dakota leather for the most part is the most wear resistant stuff out there unless you have MB Text. I have never had this issue...
