In my case, the pitting on the shafts was definitely the source of the clunking. Replaced both struts and not a single clunk since.

You should get a warranty replacement if it is visibly pitted. The struts were in great shape other than the pitting. These Bilstein's were installed in Feb 2009.

I asked myself the same question...
