Most seat seals are not easy or straightforward. Any good upholstery shop can replace foam, or find a better set. Use good foam from a passenger seat to rebuild your drivers seat.

He's got $20k to spend, not $2k. I wouldn't recommend an e34 for someone with that budget as he'll spend most of it on repairs. The newest e34 is almost 20 years old.

I would second jhurless above. I was going to recommend a 2001-2003 530i with the sport package. It will be fast enough, but not as fast as the 540i. But also won't have the terminal timing chain...

Hate to say it, but if it's slipping it sounds like it's on the way out. I'd drain and refill it first, see if new fluid helps. If not, start saving for a used or rebuild trans. They don't last...

Also check all rubber hoses, lines, especially fuel lines for cracks. Replace anything...
