I tried option #2 on the back pillars - no dice. It's hard to get to them and thus it's hard to glue them right. Mine got saturated with glue and when that dried the material harden and looked weird....

If you are replacing the belts, you should consider replacing the pulleys as well. I would even consider replacing the water pump. I saw the updated model with the metal propeller for ~ $25.
