Test 3 would not be a wise thing to do. With the battery not connected properly the voltage from the alternator could rise to 16 volts, maybe a bit higher and damage circuitry.
Tests 1&2 are valid....

The above pic also shows holes in the bumper for the license plate.
The M5 bumper I bought from the dealer doesn't come with those plate holes....
