Turns out it's the consequence of my CCV delete / catch can conversion.
After I reassembled and tested the car again today, the noise was still there....

Don't think so, I listened many times to it very closely, it sounds like it's coming from the area where the manifold and the head come together or perhaps more toward the center of the manifold.

I went ahead and pulled the manifold just now.
Nothing obvious except one of the seven nuts that hold the manifold to the head wasn't tight all the way. Could it cause the leak? Doubt it....

Take yours out, there should be the HW and SW versions stamped on the label.
Look for one that's at least your version or higher.

I felt I wanted to flush the system with something solid and pressurized, garden hose worked great.
And the air makes sure most if not all water is gone.
