Most likely moisture in one of the sensors. The sensors just deteriorate with time. You can find new sensors for good prices on ebay. I got a whole front-rear set for about $180.

Moisture will creep into the PDC sensors with time. I've had to replace 7 of my 8 original sensors since I got his car 4 years ago. Fortunately you can get them reasonably cheap on Ebay.

With occasional or even permanent failure it is most likely the sensors. Over time, moisture gets into the sensors and wear them down.
You can find new sensors on ebay for 18 (~$27) and upwards....
