Measure the fuel pressure at idle. S/b 50 psi+. There is a Schrader valve on the fuel rail.

The temp sensor is a stand-alone circuit. Try unplugging it. The cluster should read minus 40 deg.

The sensor itself is a thermistor - it may be intermittent.

Some have reported a harder brake pedal with the steel lines.

Whatever you do, make sure you don't drain the ABS assembly, else you'll be flat-bedding the car to the dealer to bleed the air out.

Not unusual for the I6, from what I've read. The M54 is a little thirsty for oil.

Buy a copy of Bimmer magazine. Ask for a copy of Mike Miller's maintenance schedule. He makes a bunch of reasonable observations from his years as a BMW wrench.

S/b a relatively easy job for the mechanically adept. Take a good look at the assembly....

I'd verify the diagrams with the Bentley manual before beginning my troubleshooting, just to make sure. The word "general" is a question. Also, the North American wiring is probably different.

AFAIK, the P-codes, et al, are stored in the DME. BMW-specific tools can access the other buses in the car via the OBD connector, using the proper protocol.
