Convertible Soft Top Lock broken

Yesterday I went to close my soft top (roof open) and the latch exploded! It looks like the plastic latch had become brittle over time.

My guess is that this car was bought in Europe and shipped over for non road use (ie track racing etc). It is probably registered in CA just so that they know the car exists but will never get tags...

My guess is spilled oil. If the smoke blows out of the exhaust then like ^^^He ^^^ said. Get someone to gently rev the engine and go and look at the exhaust. Then you'll know for sure what it is.

I don't know how BMW did it but the Z3 is still a gorgeous car and hasn't aged like all the other mass manufactured cars. I'm guessing it's down to the pedigree of artistry they put into the design....
