That's what I meant when I referenced depending on the perspective, if it's coming at you you can't tell the difference until you can see the whole car from the broad side. Definitely not the case...

It's a timing chain and no failure isn't imminent. The problem is stemming from lack of oil changes damaging the VANOS units and the guides that the chain travels on. They call it timing chain...

You do not have to change the sensor but I would recommend having one one hand just in case. they can become brittle and you can potentially damage it by removing it from the old brake pad.
