Depends... are they the early polished lip...

Depends... are they the early polished lip versions or the later "trim ring" lip versions? I had a set on my former E39 that were the trim-ring verions. To replace that ring was nearly $200 way back...

You're right about the shocks... they are too long for lowering springs. If they're not dead already, they will be soon. Shocks have nothing to do with ride height. All the weight of the car is on...

You have about .5 degree of adjustment on the front if you remove the alignment pin. I don't know how much you'll gain by lowering 1.5" up front, but maybe some creative google searches can help with...

I can tell you there are no hoses under the hood that just pop off. It's safe to say you did not knock something off without knowing it. Throw it in the spare parts bin for another time. :-)
