I don't know how the plasti-dip works, but I have to assume that you'd need to remove the trim pieces off the steering wheel. For me, it wasn't worth the hassle because the shiny black underneath...

Not true. The backup camera is a part of the ultimate package, or can be ordered separately if you opt for the tech package instead of the ultimate package. Our 2014 X1 has the backup camera.

Update about a week later and several good rains...

Update about a week later and several good rains plus the hose test. Vapor barrier repaired with a $7 tube of Permatex Ultra Gray gasket maker and the inside of the car is dry! Saved a nice chunk...
