After BMW replaced the pads, no more squealing. I've got 30,000 on the new pads and no noise at all. I think it was the pads themselves but they refused to change them for quite a while.

I always drive with the sun shade wide open on my X3. If you are good with that, then there is no loss of headroom. However, some people like to close the sunshade and then you do lose the headroom.
