I had the same issue on my 1999, ended up being the abs module, had to send it over to the authorized Bosch dealer to have them fixed for like $200-300.

12mm w/ bolts (which I used for the front wheels)

I test drove few 1997 e36 M3 4drs but they were abused badly.... didn't like it at all,...
