I think I have found a 140 deg orange, through hole LED that is bright enough to light the switch. The only issues are mounting it and eliminating the bright spot immediate in front of the LED.

That is pretty safe. I generally disconnect the battery before I work on or disturb the wiring, but I would not bother if I were just unplugging the chime.

I would disconnect the battery before mucking with the ignition switch. I think it entirely unfused. The steering wheel and airbag can stay.
