Could it be that the oil is really being consumed at the track but the measuring system is only catching up when you're on your way home?

Same here. roughly 1L/1000Km(625miles) ever since I bought the car 15000Km ago. It has close to 87000km (55000miles) on it now. No leaks, no smoke.

I did a search on the 5 forum and there were a couple posts where the carbon build up was cleaned for $250-500. I am not sure what that involves but it's worth pursuing.
