I don't doubt they could have built a fuel efficient I-6 but it would cost more in R&D cost AND more in production cost than the current approach to 500 cc cylinders across the line.

The M bumpers are more than just cosmetic. They are designed that way to let air in to the auxiliary radiators which are not there on the non M-sport/non-M cars.
