Runners are smooth, sure, but they are perpendicular to the intake. They turn the air around the manifold for I'd guess over 200 degrees, plus the manifold inside has the runners protruding...

Of course it matters how it enters the cylinders, no one says it doesn't. What I meant is that the air changes direction several times inside the manifold after the TB, which I'd think removes most...

I doubt the "smoothness" of the intake pipes matters that much considering that before the air finally reaches the cylinders, it changes direction several times being rerouted through the air runners...

My false alarm was triggering because of the faulty motion sensor (which is inside the dome in the middle of the headliner). The electronics glitch might be related to a bad battery/alternator?

Agree! I'm debating whether I should put M3 gears in my M5 diff for even more fun. The downside of course is higher RPM at speed in the already overly thirsty beasty :D

I started just like you, never done anything serious to a car, but always very curious. In the 5 years that I've owned my '98 540i I've turned almost every bolt in it and still enjoy working on it....

Don't know what a 530i without a muffler sounds like, but my 540i was too loud for my taste at WOT so I ended up getting the Dinan muffler and later removing the resonator. Love it.
