This is a common practice to cure weak laser. What is not common is to see bmw owner doing it and sharing it with community instead of taking it to the dealer for component swap.

I gained between 1-2 mpg after i removed the filter (combined city freeway driving). There are several m5 dyno tests that show results with and without the filter.

The 2008 and 2009 550i with M Aero package came with 172 wheels. They had the M logo. Looking at the pictures of you car it doesn't look you use 172 wheels.

There are DYNO runs on M5 that show 20+hp increase after removing those filters (M5 has dual intake, so 2 filters instead of 1 on N62). I removed both of them on my 550i's. Engine got a little louder...

I like 172 the most. They are aggressive and not overdone. 166 is an older wheel that came stock on M5. It is great but not quite as aggressive.
