With occasional or even permanent failure it is most likely the sensors. Over time, moisture gets into the sensors and wear them down.
You can find new sensors on ebay for 18 (~$27) and upwards....

I had very similar problems with mine. Ended up replacing the DVD-drive itself. Cost about 100 for a new one. The disc is easy to take out when you disasemble the drive.
