My understanding is the voltage regulator still provides the excitation current. What has changed is the alternator's output can be set by a bus signal to the VR from the DME.

If they did, the best check is to measure crankcase vacuum with a vacuum gage or slack tube manometer. Should be 4-6" H20. It's been discussed here.

If temp is really this high, it's overheating. This will overpressurize the cooling system and can cause failure of a 12 year old expansion tank.

Install a new radiator cap. Cap is not suppose to open until 2 bar....~29 PSI.

Of course the 2012(?) and later 528i is a 4 cyl turbo, DI engine. I see no reason to believe these problems will go away.
Turbo + DI is here to stay.
