My understanding is you will start throwing codes and while the car might not be operating optimally, you can still get around.

It's a pretty easy DIY, even I was able to change them.

Is this overkill?

Includes:
- valve cover gasket
- 15 rubber grommets
- 15 metal washers
- oil cap seal

Have not read anybody replacing the metal washers. At $2.95 each that's $44

You can absolutely do that. Basically that is what Pep Boys did for me but I didn't want to deal with any of it so I had them do the whole removal, spring compression and installation for me.
