Pleiades is right, you just need to force the lid off by pulling it off with the bolt in situ. I was in the same position a couple of years ago and it takes a bit of faith but most likely the lid...

Well I still haven't replaced my dodgy actuator on the passenger side but I've bought some illuminated E38 inner door handles so after fitting the rear doors decided I'd do the driver side one first...
